Studley Castle underscores the company’s commitment to heritage conservation.
We recently carried out a conservation project at Studley Castle in Warwickshire. This 19th-century country house, a Grade II* listed building, has been transformed into a luxurious Warner Leisure Hotel. Despite its name, the building has never been used as a castle, with the actual medieval site nearby being occupied by Old Studley Castle, a 16th-century house.
Studley Castle, with its rich historical and architectural significance, has recently undergone a substantial £50 million refurbishment. Reopened in April 2019 as part of the Warner Leisure Hotels collection, the castle combines historical charm with modern luxury. The conservation of this historic structure was essential to preserve its architectural integrity while adapting it for contemporary use.
The Challenge
The conservation project at Studley Castle focused on preserving and enhancing the building's traditional features, ensuring that the historical character of the castle was maintained throughout its transformation into a modern hotel. The primary areas of work included:
Masonry Repairs
Restoration of the castle’s stone façade, addressing weathering and structural damage.
Repointing and replacement of damaged stones using local materials to ensure historical accuracy and structural integrity.
Cleaning and repairing ornamental stone features to restore their original splendour.
Window Conservation
Refurbishment of the castle’s windows, ensuring they remain true to the original design while improving their functionality and longevity.
Repairing or replacing damaged window frames and glass panes, maintaining the historical aesthetic.
Ensuring the windows are properly sealed and weatherproofed to protect the interior of the building.
The Methodology
Mono Masonry employed traditional conservation techniques, using local materials that matched the original construction to ensure the repairs were in keeping with the building’s historic character. The team meticulously documented the existing conditions, allowing for a precise restoration process that respected the historical significance of the castle.
The Impact
The conservation efforts at Studley Castle have successfully preserved an essential piece of Warwickshire’s architectural heritage. By using historically accurate materials and techniques, Mono Masonry has ensured that the building’s unique features will be safeguarded for future generations. The project not only maintained the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the castle but also enhanced its functionality as a modern hotel.
